Jim West

Jim West is a Systems Modeller with CSIRO’s Ecosystem Sciences division.

Originally from a background in economic geology, since 2004 he has been involved in quantifying and modelling the physical stocks and flows which underlie the economic systems and sub-systems, from national to local regional levels, and in analysing the resource efficiency of individual nations and major world regions. Modelling scenarios of alternative development paths for different economic sectors, the effect this has on resources demand, and interactions of these different paths with the environment, have been an important extensions to this work.

A further major research interest, integral to his PhD candidature in the Griffith School of Environment at Griffith University, is analysing the changing primary materials requirements of nations as they undergo the socio-metabolic transition from advanced agrarian to industrialized society.
