Prof John Boland

John Boland's research focus lies in combining mathematical, statistical and time series techniques, particularly in the area of environmental modelling and assessment. The result of this is that he has wide ranging applications of his approach to applying rigorous mathematical techniques to real world problems.

A short summary of the scope of his work and professional achievements includes:

  • Fourteen nationally competitive grants, including eight ARC Discovery and Linkage, since 2000 (having received his PhD in 1996).  It is important to note that there is a diversity of fields in these grants from water resource management, renewable energy and its integration into the electricity grid, food waste reduction, permeable pavers, solar energy forecasting, climate change adaptation to ecosystem regeneration, and water management and wildfire mitigation.
  • Over one hundred refereed scientific papers.
  • One patent - Siddins M., Matthews B. and Boland J., A Priority Enabling System for Waiting List Management, World Intellectual Property Organisation, WO/2009/033223, 19.03.2009.
  • Twelve successful PhD completions, some as Principal Supervisor, some as Co-Supervisor and some as Associate Supervisor.
  • Co-Director of the 2011 Australia and New Zealand Applied Mathematics Conference.
  • Co-Convenor of the 2013 Modelling and Simulation (MODSIM2013) conference.
  • Editor for Energy Meteorology for Renewable Energy journal, and member of the Editorial Board of two other international journals.
  • Director of the Division of Resource Assessment and Climate for the International Solar Energy Agency.
  • Member of Task 46, International Energy Agency, Solar Forecasting.
